Mother's Day is a beautiful time to honor the women who have loved, nurtured, taught, prayed, sacrificed, encouraged, and served in ways that often go unseen.  For many families, it is a joyful day, filled with flowers, cards, hugs, meals, and memories.  For others, Mother's Day may bring complicated emotions such as grief, longing, strained relationships, infertility, loss, or memories of a mother who is no longer here.  No matter what Mother's Day looks like in our homes, one of the most meaningful gifts we can offer is prayer.  Prayer is more than a sentimental gesture.  It is a way to bring the mothers in our lives before the Lord, asking Him to strengthen them, bless them, comfort them, guide them, and remind them that their labor is not in vain.  As we pray for our mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, step-mothers, spiritual mothers, foster mothers, adoptive mothers, or other special women who have poured into our lives, here aer scripture based prayers to pray for our mothers on Mother's Day and every day of the year.

Make a Handmade Mother's Day Card

A handmade card is one of the most meaningful Mother's Day gifts kids can create.  Children can fold a piece of construction paper, decorate it with crayons, stickers, flowers, hearts, or drawings, and write a simple message inside.  

Younger children might write:

I love you, Mom!

Thank you for taking care of me!

Older children can write a longer note sharing what they appreciate most about their mom.  A card becomes even more special when it includes a personal memory, a favorite thing about Mom, or a promise to help her in some way.  

Create an "All About My Mom" Page

Kids love answering questions about their moms, and moms love reading their children's sweet and funny answers.  An "All About My Mom" page can include prompts such as:

My mom's favoite food is ________.

My mom is special because _______.

My favorite thing to do with my mom is _______.

My mom makes me laugh when _______.

These pages often become keepsakes because they capture a child's thoughts in a precious season of life.  Even misspelled words and silly answers can make the gift more memorable.

My children are all grown up now, but I still have all of their "All About My Mom" pages.  I put them all in scrapbooks, and even after all these years, I still love reading their answers.

Give Mom a Coupon Book

A Mother's Day coupon book is a simple gift that costs almost nothing, but can be very meaningful.  Kids can make coupons for small acts of love and service such as:

One Big Hug

Help with Dishes

Help with Breakfast

Read a Book Together

Special Time Together

Help Fold Laundry

Children can decorate each coupon.  Mom can redeem them throughout the week.  This is a good way to teach children that gifts do not have to be things.  Sometimes the best gifts are time, kindness, and helpfulness.

Simple and Inexpensive Mother’s Day Crafts and Gift Ideas for Kids

Write "10 Reasons I Love My Mom."

A "10 Reasons I Love My Mom" list is a beautiful keepsake and an easy writing activity for kids.  Children can write one reason on each line or draw pictures instead.  Examples might include:

She hugs me when I am sad.

She reads to me.

She makes yummy food.

She prays for me.

She helps me learn.

She takes care of our family.

She laughs with me.

She teaches me right from wrong.

She listens to me.

She loves me every day.

This activity helps children slow down and think about the many ways mom shows love throughout the year. 

Draw a Favorite Memory with Mom

Children can celebrate Mother's Day by drawing a picture of a favorite memory.  This might be a trip to the park, baking cookies, reading together, going to church, taking a walk, planting flowers, or snuggling on the couch.  After drawing the picture, children can write a few sentences about the memory.  This activity gives mom a glimpse into what her child treasures most.  Sometimes children treasure small moments that adults might not realize were meaningful.  

Interview Mom

An interview page is a fun Mother's Day activity that helps children learn more about their mom.  Kids can ask questions like:

What was your favorite toy as a child?

What did you want to be when you grew up?

What is your favorite food?

What makes you happy?

What is something you love about our family?

What advice do you have for me?

This activity can lead to sweet conversations and family storytelling.  It also reminds children that mom has her own memories, dreams, favorites, and experiences.  

Make a Simple Flower Craft

Flowers are a classic Mother's Day Gift, but they do not have to be expensive.  Kids can make paper flowers using construction paper, cupcake liners, tissue paper, or coffee filters.  They can also draw or paint flowers, or make a flower bouquet from handprints.  For an extra special touch, children can write one thing they love about Mom on each flower petal.  Then, they can glue the flowers together to make a bouquet.

Make a "Best Mom Award"

Kids can create a simple award certificate for Mom.  It might say "Best Mom Award," "World's Best Mom," or "Best Mom Ever."  Children can decorate the certificate with hearts, flowers, stickers, or drawings.  A certificate feels official and fun, especially when kids present it to Mom with a big hug and smile.  This certificate can become a keepsake for a scrapbook, memory box, or refrigerator display.

Spend Time Together

The most meaningful gift kids can give to mom is time.  Mother's Day does not need to be packed with expensive outings.  Simple family time is just as special.  Kids can invite mom to:

Take a walk

Read a book together

Play a board game

Have a picnic in the yard

Watch a family movie

Plant flowers

Bake cookies

Look through family photos

Color or draw together

Sit outside and talk

Moms appreciate moments of connection more than anything else.

Why Simple Mother's Day Activities Matter

Simple Mother's Day activities help children focus on love, gratitude, creativity, and service.  They remind kids that celebrating someone does not have to be complicated or expensive.  A hand-made card, a thoughtful note, a helpful chore, or a sweet drawing can become a treasured gift.  

These activities also give children the opportunity to think about the many ways their mothers and mother figures care for them every day.  Mother's Day becomes more than a holiday.  It becomes a chance to practice appreciation, kindness, and love.

Hello!  It has been a while since you last heard from me, but I have good reasons for my absence here on the blog.  First, I have a new granddaughter!  She's is the apple of my eye.  She smiles all the time.  She is such a joy and I'm loving my new position as Nonnie.  Secondly, I took time off the blog to do something I've wanted to do since high school.  I finally did something I've dreamed about for 32 years.  I wrote a novel.  My first Christian fiction novel will be released soon.  It's a novel about 4 women in 4 different circumstances.  3 women find themselves dealing with unplanned pregnancies while the 4th woman's life unexpectedly intertwines with the first three.  It's a novel about life, loss, love, forgiveness, mercy, grace, and healing.  I'll be sure to let you know when it becomes available.  

You might not know about my first publication.  Back in 2016, I was diagnosed with a chronic illness called Crohn's Disease.  I was discouraged at first because Crohn's Disease is a tough disease to fight and manage.  My "pity party" as I like to call it didn't last long because I realized that though chronic illness is tough and it might steal my happiness for a time, it could never steal my joy.  My happiness is based on my circumstances, but my joy is based on my faith in God who is greater than my disease or any earthly affliction.  If you or someone you love suffers from a chronic illness, I hope my little 10 day devotional, When Chronic Illness Steals Your Joy, will help restore a joy that only seems lost.  You'll find it here.

Celebrating Easter by Remembering Jesus' Suffering

Easter is just around the corner.  For me, Holy Week has always been somber.  The truth is I don't like to think about the betrayal of Jesus and His suffering.  I like to skip on to Sunday and focus on His resurrection.  When The Passion of the Christ was released, I watched it once in the theater, but I have not watched it since.  I couldn't get it out of my mind for months.  We purchased the movie but we have never even taken it out of its original packaging.  I don't like to focus on that part of the Easter story, but you know what?  We should read about it, watch it, and think about it.  Jesus suffered in our place so we should know all the horrors of His scourging and crucifixion.  It should make me as sick now as it did back then.  It should make us all sick.  It was His suffering that paid for our sin.  It was His suffering that gave us a way to eternal life in Heaven with Him.  Without the suffering, there would have been no death, no sacrifice, no resurrection.  Jesus did suffer.  He died in our place.  He rose again.  He is alive today and He offers the free gift of eternal life for those who believe in Him and repent of their sins.  If you would like to know more about the free gift of eternal life, you can learn more here.

Then, it happens. You make a mistake . . . then another . . . then another. Now you're second guessing your ability to be a good mom. You find yourself praying that silent prayer.

Lord, please don't let me mess up my kid.

Before long you think you've made a mess of things, a huge mess of things. You've made such a mess of things that you've given up on being a great mom. In fact, you think you're a terrible one.

Not true, sweet mama. Yeah, we all mess up. Some of us have messed up big, but God knew we would. He knows our weaknesses and imperfections, but He chose us to parent our children because He knew we were perfect for them.

When motherhood and I were just getting acquainted, I thought I could approach her like taking a test. If I prepared well and made few mistakes, I could ace this thing and therefore send my children into the wild blue yonder with nary a carry-on size bit of baggage. I assumed good parenting would fit nicely within my hard work ethic and efforts, and the results would be few mothering mistakes.

Yeah, right.

Let’s all just take a moment to roll our eyes and say, “Bless your heart” to my younger, clueless self.

It didn’t take long to discover this parenting gig brought more trick questions and multiple choice answers than I ever dreamt. I didn’t know all the answers then or now, not by a long shot. Some days, I was certain I didn’t know any. I made (make!) mistake after mistake after mistake, and I was sure I got everything wrong. I became afraid of my weaknesses, certain the more I messed up parenting, the more I messed up my kids.

Discouragement sat beside me and continually asked me one question: Why can’t you get your act together?

And the answer came like a song on a breeze,

Because it is through your mess I most teach you about Me. You are a great mama — not in spite of your mess, but because of it.

The longer I work through this parenting gig (nineteen years and counting!), the more I see it’s true. Because while we all have our hot mess moments and feel like we don’t often have our act together, we have a God who brings good out of everything all the time.

So, here are three reasons your mess makes you a great mama:

1. Your mess sends the message we’re to rest in promises, not perfection.

I know in my heart perfection is an unrealistic and downright bad ideal, but how often do I act like perfection is attainable and acceptable?

Perfection should never be the goal of parenting because a perfect mom is not an excellent mom. A perfect mom – if she could exist – is an unapproachable mom. How could our kids be close to us if we demanded perfection from ourselves or them? Our kids aren’t perfect, and they know they aren’t. They know we’re not. It comforts them to know mama doesn’t expect perfection, either in themselves or herself.
So instead of resting in perfection, we rest in promises such as these:

He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart, he gently leads those that have young.
Isaiah 40:11 (NIV)

It doesn’t say He spends energy on raising perfect little lambs but gathering, carrying, and loving them.

2. Your mess sends the message that you are just the right mama to raise your babies.

If you spend quality time with your kids, love God, and talk to them about Jesus’ love for them, you’re a good mama regardless of what you feel like. Regardless of what you see that mom doing over there that you aren’t doing over here and think you should be doing to be a good mom. Remember, it’s not good mom/bad mom. It’s good mom/different kind of good mom.

Often I tell my children that if God lined up all the kids in the world and told me to pick only three, I would pick them — the three I have. What if we turn that inside out and imagine God lining up all the mothers in the world and picking just one to mother your particular children? He picked you and only you. Since God placed your children — with their distinct personalities, character traits and interests — into your life, you are the best mama for your babies, period.

We all have different kinds of messes, but we can all still be good mamas in the messes because God fills all our different gaps.

3. Your mess sends the message that mistakes are allowed and grace is welcome.

Our messy parts hold the opportunity to teach our children one of the most important lessons they can ever learn: grace.

Every parent blows it from time to time, but it’s what we do afterwards that stays with our kids. When we mess up parenting, we look our kiddos in the eyes and tell them we’re sorry. We ask for their forgiveness and remind them that mama needs grace as much as they do.

Proverbs 3:34 says, “The Lord gives grace to the humble.” When we apologize to our kids, we show humility and invite grace into our homes, and heaven knows everyone wants to reside in a house where grace lives.

I've been thinking a lot about my mother and my grandmothers lately, especially with Mother's Day approaching.  I think about the legacy they left for me.  This fall, I will hold my first grand baby in my arms.  If I can be only a fraction of a grandmother to my grandbaby that my grandmothers were to me and a fraction of the grandmother to my grandbaby that my mother has been to my children, I will be doing well.  The legacy of a Christian mom not only blesses one generation, but several.  The legacy of a christian mom can be handed down from one generation to another and to another and to another.  Teri at Dayspring Cards and Gifts writes about the legacy of a christian mom as it relates to her.

I’m a fourth-generation pastor’s wife. My great-grandfather was a Southern Baptist preacher as was my grandfather as is my dad. And, as it worked out though I promised never to do it, I find myself almost twenty-one years into marriage with my own pastor-husband. (Side note: Never say never.) As I look back at the legacy of faith my Christian mom, grandmother, and great-grandmother built, I realize I have big shoes to fill when it comes to raising my own Christian children.

My Neenie was the consummate Southern lady. Always elegant and gracious. In her ninety-plus years, her faith was the steady backbone of our family. As her sight failed, she listened to the Bible on audio tapes. She prayed over and for all of us, reminding us it was God alone who provided for us, who sustained us.

My Bigmama is, as my uncle says, “a force of nature.” Even at eighty-two, she sweeps into a room, filling it with energy and life. She’s passionate and creative and has the most beautiful servant heart. Even now, as she cares for my Bigdaddy who has Parkinson’s, Bigmama welcomes others into her home and her heart. Her hospitality is a beautiful picture of the God who welcomes us all to Him.

My mom is quiet, reflective. Rarely willing to step into the spotlight, her prayer journals are full of the needs of others and the sweet ways God has answered. Though she will always step in when needed, her preference is always to help and serve in the shadows.

As Mother’s Day approaches, I’ve been thinking about what a gift it is to have this heritage. To be part of a line of women who have taught and served and loved in countless ways is nothing to take lightly.
The lessons I’ve learned from each of them influence every part of my life. From my Neenie, a passion for the sustaining power of the Word of God. From my Bigmama, an abiding love for the Lord and for His Church. From my mom, a willingness to serve wherever I’m needed.

I’m raising a daughter of my own now. She’s seventeen and when I look at her, my prayer is always that she will love the Lord and abide in Him. I’m thankful she’s next in this line of women who have devoted themselves to the Lord. I see in her Neenie’s quiet grace, Bigmama’s devoted love, my mom’s ability to notice others.

Just as these women have profoundly impacted my life, they’ve also influenced hers. We’re the beneficiaries of these mothers who love the Lord, who pray, who walk in obedience and faith. It’s a firm foundation they’ve laid for us to walk upon and every day I pray we continue to shine, as they do, the light of Christ in this world.

Take time to let them know how much they mean to you with a handwritten card or inspirational gift, or by simply sending an Ecard. Learning from a Mother's Faith

You are invited to watch, listen, and worship with us here.

 Our Scripture passage on this Mother's Day is Matthew 15:21-28.

1.  The struggle is real.

The woman's daughter was demon possessed.  Life is hard.  Sometimes we can do everything right and and life still hurts.  Sometimes struggles are because of choices we make.  Sometimes struggles come from circumstances which are not our fault.

2.  Life's great struggles require great faith.

This mother's great faith was persistent.

Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. I'm not sure if this song is the one my pastor was referring to in the video.  In my search, I found there are several versions of songs titled "Mama Prayed," but I landed on this one and loved it.

Jesus doesn't promise to always heal, but He does promise that whoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.

Easy Mother's Day Crafts for Kids: Easily Adaptable Gift Crafts for Kids to Make at Home

Since almost the entire USA is in the middle of school-from-home orders, teachers are missing out on the fun of helping their students make handmade Mother's Day gifts for their moms.  You know what?  If you are a mom at home with your kids, you can still help them make a gift for you.  In order to keep the surprise effect, recruit another adult in the house or an older sibling to help your young child with the craft.  Since many of us are under shelter-at-home orders, I have compiled a list of easy Mother's Day crafts for kids.  These craft gifts are made with simple items that you most likely have at your home or you can order them and hopefully get them delivered in plenty of time.  Your child will light up when he or she gives his or her perfect handmade gift to Mom in honor of her special day.

Butterfly Hand-Print Card

Gather a few colorful sheets of construction paper or cardstock, a little paint (crayons or markers will work too), and glue.  If you have googly eyes at home or any other materials your child can use to decorate the butterfly, gather those as well.  You'll need a marker or pencil to draw around your child's hand and scissors to cut out the handprint.  Then, head over to Simple Everyday Mom for complete instructions for completing this craft.

Paint Mom a Porcelain Vase

This Mindware paint-your-own-porcelain-vase set comes with three porcelain vases, 12 porcelain paints, and 1 brush.  The instructions say you just paint, bake, and display.  Your child can make flowers from construction paper or tissue paper to display in the vases or use the vases to display real flowers.  This looks like fun.  I kind of want to order a set for myself. 

Mama Bear Card 

Does your child love bear books or bear crafts?  He or she can make a mama bear card for your special day.  You'll need simple items such as card-stock or construction paper, scissors for cutting out the bear shape, googly eyes, and a small pom pom.  If you don't have the googly eye or pom poms, that's OK.  Your child can draw the bear's eyes and nose.  Once you gather materials for your child, head over to The Best Ideas for Kids for detailed instructions.  You'll have the option to get a bear card template sent to you via email.

This Mommy and Me Memory Book kit contains enough materials to make 12 books so it's perfect for classroom teachers to use in their classes.  If you're a dad who wants to use this with your child to make a Mother's Day gift for Mom, just know that you are actually ordering 12 individual wrapped kits.  Of course, if you have several children, then you'll have all you need and probably enough left over for a child who wants to redo the cover or pages.  The books are approximately 5in. X 7in. 

Painted Flower Pot

 

My kids made this flower pot a few years ago.  We had a clay flower pot, tempera paints, Styrofoam balls, flower pick stems with wire, watercolor paints, and coffee filters.  This craft can be easily adapted to use other items.  Instead of a clay pot, you can use a large Solo cup, an old plastic planter, an old vase, or even a bowl.  If you don't have tempera paints or watercolor paints, you can use markers.  Instead of Styrofoam balls, you can use sand, dirt, rocks, old fabric cut into pieces, or anything that will fit into the pot that will hold the stems.  If you don't have the green pick stems with wire, you can use sticks and tape, paper or plastic straws, or whatever you can find that will work for the flower stems.  If you don't have coffee filters, you can use tissue colorful tissue paper or construction paper.  Follow the basic instructions in my original post, but adapt this craft according to whatever you have at home.  I'd love to see how your pots turn out.  Come back and leave us a photo in the comments below.  :)

Popsicle Frame with Buttons

Do you have popsicle sticks and a bunch of random buttons?  Your child can make a photo frame to display his or her button art.  You'll need construction paper, popsicle sticks, buttons, and glue.  Then head over to East Coast Mommy for complete instructions.

Suncatcher Art

These suncatcher hearts at Where Imagination Grows were intended for Valentine's Day, but this activity can easily be adapted for a Mother's Day gift.  You can use a heart shaped cookie cutter if you want, but you can use a flower or any other favorite shape.  You'll need a cookie cutter of your choice (or your child's choice), Elmer's glue (you'll need the kind your child can pour), wax paper, and beads, small buttons, or any other small objects that fit inside the cookie cutter.  These turn out cute and you and your child will enjoy it watching it glisten in a sunny window.

Love Bug Mason Jar Card

Does you child love to catch fireflies?  Here in the south, we call them lightning bugs.  We used to catch them, put them in a jar and watch the jar light up.  This memory makes me nostalgic.  If your child loves spending time outside,  have him or her make mom a card that reminds her of your child.  Head over to Glued to My Crafts for complete instructions for completing this adorable card featuring your child's thumb print.

Painted Wooden Flower Planter

Give mom the gift of real flowers.  I love this adorable painted planter.  I found it over at 5 Minutes for Mom.  Find a wooden box.  I doesn't have to look just like the one shown.  Any wooden box will do.  If you don't have a wooden box, look around for scrap pieces of wood and make one.  If you are not getting out due to the current COVID19 health crisis, check for nurseries that will deliver flowers to your home or perhaps you can schedule a curbside pick up.  Don't forget the potting soil.  Visit 5 Minutes for Mom now for complete instructions.
