Clumpies Icecream Shop in Chattanooga, Tennessee

If you've been following this blog for a while, then you know how much we love Chattanooga, Tennessee.  We go there a lot.  My husband goes there for business quiet often.  It's only a few hours from our home so we go there pretty often for fun too.  On our last visit, we were told about an ice cream shop called Clumpies.  We had never been to Clumpies so we were excited to find out about a new place to visit.  The fact that they sold old fashioned ice cream was definitely a bonus.  We were not disappointed.

The ice cream shop was clean.  They offered a lot of flavors.  The decor was fun with sort of a retro air about it.

We enjoyed the wall murals.  The colors were light, fun, and very appealing.  The dining room was a place that made you feel like you just want to hang out in there for awhile.

They sell merchandise in the store so if you visit Clumpies and you love it, you might want to buy a Clumpies mug or hat.  We loved the mixed feel of both modern and retro in the shop.

Now to the best part . . . the ice cream!

When we waled into Clumpies Ice Cream Shop, I knew the ice cream just had to be good.  I was correct.  The ice cream was so delicious.  I chose the black walnut flavor.  It tasted pretty close to home made.  The flavor, coupled with the retro environment, reminded me of my childhood.  When I was growing up, we couldn't afford to eat out all the time or just go for ice cream any time we wanted it.  Those treats were only for special occasions.  Most of the ice cream we enjoyed was made from one of those old hand crank ice cream machines.  We used to take turns rotating the handle.  It was quiet the workout but always worth it.  Those were good days.  Clumpies Ice Cream Shop reminded me of those good days.

The Chattanooga Zoo

Shop Digital Downloads

Recently my daughter and I visited the Chattanooga Zoo for the second time.  The first time, we were not really all that impressed.  There weren't many animals.  We spent about an hour there.  When we left, we felt like it wasn't worth the money . . . BUT . . . BUT . . . BUT . . . I'm so glad we gave it a second chance a few weeks ago.  They have added many animals and they are still building.  It was well worth the visit.

 The Chattanooga Zoo

This time, it was just my adult daughter and me visiting the Chattanooga Zoo so we took our time and enjoyed the day.  I took so many pictures.  I'm going to show you a lot of them, but if you are in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, you need to stop by and visit this zoo.  We found that the animals are clean, well kept, and appear to be well treated.

The first thing we did was visit the chimpanzee training area.  The trainers explained that they never share space with the chimpanzees.  Well, I hope not!  They showed us how the chimps present their body parts through the fence so that the trainers can check their heart rate and all the other things they need to check without entering their habitat.

Aren't the chimpanzees cute?

*Did you know that many of the same mental exercises that zoos use to mentally stimulate their animals are also good for our domestic pets?  Here's a great article about mental exercises for you dog that were leaned from zoos.

This little guy is a Desert Horned Lizard.  Horned lizards obviously love the hot weather.  They eat ants, grasshoppers, and even spiders.  They camouflage themselves into the dirt and sand.  Learn more about horned lizards at the Horned Lizard Conservation Society here.

The next little guy is a Great Basin Collard Lizard.  These lizards can run on their hind legs.  They eat insects and other reptiles.  They even eat other collard lizards!  Learn more about collard lizards here at the Arizona - Sonora Desert Museum Collard Lizard Fact Sheet.

Here we have a Spiny Tailed Monitor.  Spiny tailed monitors are known for the stripes on their necks.  Their tails can grow to twice as long as their heads and bodies combined.  Learn more about the spiny tailed monitor here at Reptiles Magazine.

Next up is the venomous Banded Rock Rattlesnake.  This little creature is found in the southwestern United States and Northern Mexico.  Banded rock rattlesnakes grow to lengths between 23 and 27 inches long, but some males have grown to 31 inches long.  They eat lizards, small mammals, birds, and other snakes.  They swallow their meals whole.  Learn more about banded rock rattlesnakes here at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

I don't like snakes at all, but I took these pictures for those who do.  This one is called a Puff Adder.  Puff Adders are found is Sub-Saharan Africa and and southwestern Saudi Arabia.  The puff adder spends most of its life in camouflage mode.  Learn more about the puff adder here at the African Snake Bite Institute.

Here's a fun one!  The old Roadrunner cartoon was one of my favorites while I was growing up so I was excited to see a real one.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a real one.  Roadrunners are fascinating little creatures.  They live in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.  They were born to run.  Roadrunners can outrun humans and kill rattlesnakes.  Learn more about roadrunners here at All About Birds.

I think this is one of the cutest animals we visited at the Chattanooga Zoo.  This is a Fennec Fox.  The Fennec Fox is the world's smallest fox.  They live in Africa's Sahara Desert but the heat doesn't bother them too much because they are nocturnal.  They eat almost anything.  Learn more about the Fennec Fox here at Wildlife Learning Center.

I didn't know that mole rats are not moles or rats.  These little guys are Naked Mole Rats.  Apparently, the naked mole rat is more like a porcupine.  The naked mole rat lives its entire life underground.  They grow to approximately 3 inches long.  The largest member of the colony is the queen and she can weigh a whole 2.5 ounces.  Personally, these are ugly little creatures.  Learn more about the naked mole rat here at Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.

Have you ever heard of a Rhinoceros Iguana?  It gets its name from the horn like structures on its head.  It loves the sun.  The rhinoceros iguana can live about 20 years, sometimes a little longer.  Learn more about the rhinoceros iguana here at the Sea World website.

The Bobcat is the most common wild cat species in North America.  They live in forests, grasslands, and swamps.  Humans don't see them very often because they are pretty sneaky animals and they mostly move at night.  To learn more about bobcats, visit the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute here.

The cougar was a pretty impressive animal to visit as well.  A cougar usually weighs about 136 pounds.  Some other names for the cougar are mountain lion, puma, and panther.  They like to eat deer, coyote, raccoons, and porcupines.  Learn more about the cougar at National Geographic here.

The Golden Lion Tamarin is one of the most endangered species in the world.  There home is found in the Atlantic Coastal Forests of Brazil.  They live almost entirely in the trees.  Learn more about the Golden Lion Tamarin at the Zoo Atlanta website here.

We loved the gorgeous colors of the beautiful rainforest birds.  Macaws are known for their beautiful feather colors, but they blend into their natural habitats well which includes green leaves, yellow flowers, and red fruits.  The heaviest of the birds weigh a little more than three pounds.  The lightest weigh less than 5 ounces!  Some can fly as fast as 40 miles per hour.  The Macaw beak is so strong that it can crush a human knuckle.  Ouch!  Learn more about these beautiful Macaw birds at the Sand Diego Zoo website here.

The Jaguar is known to be the largest cat in the New World.  They mostly live in Central and South America.  They are nocturnal hunters.  The jaguar has large jaw muscles and sharp teeth so they can eat almost anything.  The jaguar has the second strongest jaws in the world.  Only the hyena has stronger jaws.  Learn more about the jaguar at Defenders of Wildlife here.

What an impressive animal!

These are some of the animals we visited at the Chattanooga Zoo.  There were also lots of deer, beautiful peacocks, coyotes, cattle, a Great Horned Owl (which was beautiful but my photo was terrible), spider monkeys, and spiders.

A Chattanooga Zoo employee told me that they have added so much to the zoo in recent years and they are adding a lot more.  This is not a zoo I would travel for days to see or buy a plane ticket to visit YET, but it's getting there.  However, if you happen to be visiting the Chattanooga area, the Chattanooga Zoo is a great way to spend a few hours.  My daughter and I enjoyed our day and since we visit Chattanooga often, we will most definitely go back.

Places to Eat in Chattanooga, Tennessee: Taco Mamacita

If you haven't figured it out already, we go to Chattanooga, Tennessee a lot.  A few years ago, we discovered a little gem tucked away over on the North Shore.  It's a little Tex Mex restaurant called Taco Mamacita.  They serve a large variety of southwestern foods.  You can check out their complete menu in more detail here on the Taco Mamacita website.

One of our favorite items is their Sloppy Joe Taco.  Yes, a Sloppy Joe Taco.  I had never heard of one until we visited this little tucked away North Shore restaurant.  I like Sloppy Joe sandwiches and I like Tacos.  Well, the folks at Taco Mamacita figured out how to combine these two yummy foods into one and it is soooooo good.

Look at that photo.  This really huge soft taco is filled with Sloppy Joe filling, loads of cheese, jalopeno peppers and I don't even know what else.  It is simply amazing.  Some days I want to drive the 2.5 hours up there just to eat one.

So, if you find yourself on Chattanooga's North Shore at meal time, head over to Taco Mamacita's and order one of these Sloppy Joe Tacos - or choose from a huge variety of other mouth-watering menu items.

The Moxy Hotel Experience in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Shop Digital Downloads
One of our favorite places to visit is Chattanooga, Tennessee.  We live within 2.5 hours of Chattanooga so we get to go there often.  On our most recent visit, someone else booked our room for us so we had no idea what to expect when we arrived.  The Moxy Hotel is apparently a well known attraction in Chattanooga but we had never heard of it.  When we walked in, we were surprised at how small the room was.  At first we thought this would never work for us.  One of our adult daughters decided to join us after the room was booked.  The hotel was all booked up so we couldn't switch to a larger room with two beds, but with an air mattress on the floor, we made the best of it.  This is the most unique hotel in which we have ever stayed.  Seriously, I've never seen anything like it.  My first impression was that it sported sort of a millennial hippie theme.  There are things I liked about this hotel and things I didn't like.

 The Moxy Hotel Experience

I'll tell you the things I didn't like first.  It seemed like a party hotel.  The service desk is also a massive bar in the lobby.  If you happen to have children with you while you check in, they will be standing with you at a bar.  Some people will have a bigger problem with this than others.  We don't drink alcoholic beverages but we have friends and some family members who do.  We eat at local family restaurants where the bar is obvious but not part of the dining area.  Personally, I thought the party atmosphere was a bit too much but there were things about the Moxy Hotel that we thought were unique.

The Moxy Hotel

We were booked in a room with one double bed.  Occasionally, you'll see one of our luggage bags in the pictures.  Please forgive.  The room was super small so there wasn't much space to get things out of the way.  The bed was perfectly straight and well made.  The wrinkles are due to our bags being placed there as we walked in.  Notice the floor.  I'm not sure what material the floor is made from.  It doesn't feel like real wood but it looks like it.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
There was no dresser in the room, but there were two large drawers under the bed.  In the drawer was a bag for dirty clothes.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
Notice that the TV is hanging on the wall.  There was no dresser.  There was no closet either.  The hangars for hanging up your clothing are hanging on a peg on the wall beside the TV.  The rug is cute though.  :)

The Moxy Hotel

The headboard was a giant leather cushion that hung on iron pegs.

The Moxy Hotel

The night stand was probably the most normal sized item in the bedroom.  LOL

My daughter was almost too excited about this "retro" phone.  I grew up with one like this so I didn't even notice it at first.  This one has a push button dial.  Ours was the old rotary kind.  Haha

The Moxy Hotel

The decor was interesting.  I guess off-centered wall art is the thing these days.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
Remember that I said there was no dresser or closet?  Well, there is a small table but it is also hanging on pegs on the wall.  The entire wall opposite the bed was lined with giant pegs.  You can hang your clothes up there - and the table and the chair.  :)

There was a canvas bag hanging on one of the many wall pegs.  We were told that we were welcome to use it but there is a $75 charge if it is damaged or missing at the end of our stay.  We decided to leave the bag on the wall - untouched.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
The fixtures in the bedroom were all antiqued metal or iron.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
Opposite the long wall of pegs is the bathroom.  The wall between the bed and the bathroom almost made it seem like an outside room.  There was actually a window on the wall between the bedroom and the shower.  We lifted the shade to find that it is an actual shade and an actual window that reveals the area INSIDE the shower.  There is a milky film over the glass, but you can still see the person on the other side of the window INSIDE the shower.  I should mention here that this is another thing I did not like about this hotel.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
The bathroom was adorable.  The sink was large with antiqued iron or iron-like fixtures.  It was stocked with clean towels, washcloths, tissues, and a large container of Muk liquid hand soap, not the tiny little bars.

The Moxy Hotel

The light fixture above the sink was unique.

I've never even seen a rectangular shaped toilet.  It looked a little odd, but it was nice and clean.  The trashcan sitting there by the toilet is metal.  I discovered later that the toilet served as a flat table when the lid was down.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
There was no bath tub, but the shower was large.  I wasn't crazy about the clear glass shower doors though.

The Moxy Hotel
Image Credit:  Abundant Family Living (Tina Truelove)
This is the other side of that shaded window I was telling you about earlier.  I think there should be a shade that can be controlled from the inside the shower, but there wasn't.

The shower head was amazing.

Look at that huge head!  It was like standing under a waterfall.

I was happy about the full sized Muk brand shampoo/body wash and conditioner.  They had those bottles locked in place.  Nobody would be taking those home.

The Moxy Hotel

This is not your typical hotel room door.  It looked more like an outside door or an apartment door.  If you lift the shade, you'll find that milky coating which makes it harder to see through the glass.  If you look closely enough, you can still see through it.

Y'all, the elevators in that place lit up purple.  Not really my thing but my 21 year old daughter thought it was cool.

There was a long row of lockers in the downstairs lobby.

Just around the corner from the row of lockers was a computer table.  There were two desk top computers belonging to the hotel secured to the table.  There are several ports available for plugging in your own laptop.

The hotel had two studio rooms available.  We assumed these rooms were for business meetings.  We didn't go inside the rooms but they seemed private and spacious.

Studio 2 seemed a little larger than studio 1.

The public bathroom in the downstairs lobby was large and super clean.

I love the bathroom stalls.  You get your own private ROOM, not a typical stall with an open top and bottom with gaps in the door so wide that people can see inside the stall.

No one was using the gym.  Maybe it was the time of day.  I thought it was pretty cool that the stationary bike was an actual bike.

After exploring the hotel, my daughter and I decided to take a walk around the outside of the hotel.

Even though we didn't see any pets during our stay, the hotel is pet friendly.  They even have a doggie snack and water bowl outside in the game area.

This is probably not a hotel I would book again because of these reasons:

1.  The party atmosphere.

2.  The fact that the bar is also the service desk because for me personally, I wouldn't want to take young children to the bar with me to check in and I personally hate alcohol.

3.  The room was too small (and the window in the shower with the shade on the other side of the window is just wrong).

4.  There was no dresser or mini frig in the room.

5.  The table and chair hang on the wall.  If you take them down to use them, they are too small and they take up valuable space in the room (and there wasn't much of that).

However, if for some reason I have to stay at the hotel again, I won't be terrible.  I did like the fact that the hotel is located downtown so there is easy access to the downtown Chattanooga attractions.  I like the games around the hotel patio.  Oh, and I must mention that the Moxy Hotel staff was super nice and helpful.  I asked for extra towels one evening and the staffer almost beat me to the room to deliver them.  I still don't know how he did that.  If we needed something, they were on it fast.
