Giraffe Paper Bag Puppet

If you haven’t heard the news, April the giraffe is all the craze right now.  April is an adorable giraffe who lives at Animal Adventure Park in New York.  She is due to birth a baby giraffe any day now.  Thousands of people have been watching the live giraffe cam feed for a whole week now since she could give birth at any time.  When she first showed up in my Facebook feed, I thought, “Oh, how cute.  A giraffe is about to have a baby.”  Then, I kept scrolling.  A few hours later, I checked on April to see if she had birthed her baby.  I checked again a few minutes later.  Pretty soon, I was glued to the Youtube live feed along with about 100,000 other people.  A week later, I’m still watching.  So are about 100,000 others.  My daycare kids have become interested in April too.  Don’t worry.  I don’t let them stare at the computer all day long.  In fact, I won’t let them watch the birth.  Their parents can make that decision if they are watching at home when April’s little giraffe baby decides to come.  I am taking advantage of their interest though.  We decided to make a giraffe paper bag puppet.

This is a super simple puppet.  I did this with a four year old and a 2 year old.  You can cut the snout, ears, ossicones, and spots out of construction paper or you can download the template below for FREE.  Cut out the pieces and glue them into place.  When I printed them off for my kids, I thought I had made the features too small, but the they worked fine when we glued them into place.

Let the kids do as much work as they can by themselves.  We made ours just before the kids went home.  They left just as we were adding the last spots so I didn’t get to make a picture of theirs.  The one above is my sample.  It helps if they have something to look at.

You can use wiggle eyes or draw on the eyes yourself.  Giraffes have such pretty eyes so we decided to draw on our own eyes.
