Indoor Summer Learning Activities for Rainy Days

Rainy summer days don’t have to put a damper on learning and fun. In fact, they offer the perfect opportunity to engage children in creative and educational activities right from the comfort of home. If you're looking for indoor summer learning activities for rainy days, these exciting ideas will keep kids entertained, inspired, and learning, even when it’s pouring outside.

1. Indoor Science Experiments

Rainy days are perfect for hands-on science fun. Try easy experiments like making a homemade volcano, exploring static electricity with balloons, or creating a simple water cycle model. Kitchen science activities, such as making slime or growing crystals, are also exciting ways for kids to learn about chemistry and reactions while having fun indoors.

2. DIY Indoor Obstacle Course

Turn a rainy day into an active adventure by creating an indoor obstacle course. Use pillows, chairs, and blankets to build tunnels, balance beams, and jumping stations. Add a learning twist by placing flashcards or trivia questions at each station. Kids can solve math problems or answer science questions before advancing through the course.

3. Summer Reading Challenge

Encourage a love for reading with a summer reading challenge. Create a reading list of age-appropriate books and offer fun incentives for completing each one. Kids can keep track of their progress on printable reading charts or create a reading journal where they draw or write about their favorite characters and stories.

4. Educational Board Games and Puzzles

Board games and puzzles are excellent tools for reinforcing critical thinking, problem-solving, and math skills. Choose games that focus on word building, geography, or strategy. Puzzles help children develop patience and spatial awareness, making them a great rainy-day indoor learning activity.

5. Indoor Art and Craft Projects

Let creativity bloom with art and craft activities that double as learning experiences. Try making paper plate animals, creating homemade greeting cards, or experimenting with watercolor painting. Incorporate learning by introducing famous artists and their techniques or exploring the science of color mixing.

6. Cooking and Baking Lessons

Cooking with kids is a fun way to teach math, science, and life skills. Try simple recipes that allow children to measure ingredients, practice fractions, and follow step-by-step directions. Older children can experiment with creating their own recipes or exploring the cultural history behind different dishes.

7. Virtual Field Trips

Explore the world without leaving home by taking virtual field trips. Many museums, aquariums, and zoos offer free online tours and interactive exhibits. Kids can learn about space at NASA, explore the depths of the ocean, or tour famous landmarks, all from their tablet or computer.

8. Indoor Gardening Activities

Bring the outdoors inside with mini indoor gardening projects. Kids can plant seeds in small pots or recycled containers and learn about plant life cycles, photosynthesis, and responsibility as they care for their growing plants.

Rainy summer days can still be filled with excitement and learning. These indoor summer learning activities help kids stay curious, active, and engaged, no matter the weather outside. Whether your child loves science, art, reading, or cooking, there’s an activity here to brighten any rainy day.

The Armor of God: Stand Strong in Spiritual Battles

The Armor of God: Stand Strong in Spiritual Battles
The Armor of God: Stand Strong in Spiritual Battles

The Armor of God: Stand Strong in Spiritual Battles

(Ephesians 6:10-18 Study)

As Christians, we face spiritual battles every day—whether we realize it or not. The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:10-18 that our fight isn’t against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of darkness. Thankfully, God hasn’t left us defenseless. He has provided us with His Armor of God—divinely designed for strength, protection, and victory.

What Is the Armor of God?

The Armor of God, described in Ephesians 6:10-18, represents essential spiritual tools that help believers stand firm against temptation, lies, fear, and spiritual attacks. Each piece of armor equips us to face daily challenges with courage and confidence in Christ.

Here’s a breakdown of the full armor of God and what it means for your life:

1. The Belt of Truth

Truth holds everything together. God’s truth provides stability and secures your integrity, helping you stand firm against deception.

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness

This piece protects your heart and emotions. Living in right standing with God shields your identity from guilt, shame, and fear.

3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Peace keeps you grounded and steady. These shoes empower you to walk in calm assurance, no matter the circumstances, ready to share the Gospel wherever God leads.

4. The Shield of Faith

Faith acts as a barrier against the enemy’s fiery darts—fear, doubt, and lies. Holding up your shield blocks spiritual attacks and keeps you moving forward in trust.

5. The Helmet of Salvation

This helmet guards your mind, reminding you of your salvation and renewing your thoughts with hope, security, and victory in Christ.

6. The Sword of the Spirit

The Word of God is your offensive weapon. Scripture enables you to combat lies, fight back against temptation, and declare truth over every situation.

7. Prayer (Ephesians 6:18)

Though not labeled as a piece of armor, prayer connects all the pieces together. It keeps you spiritually alert and dependent on God’s guidance.

Why You Need This Armor Today

We live in a world filled with anxiety, temptation, and spiritual opposition. The Armor of God isn’t just symbolic—it’s essential for standing strong in today’s battles. When you “put on” this armor daily, you walk in protection, purpose, and peace.

Benefits of Wearing the Armor:

  • Discernment in challenging situations

  • Boldness to speak truth and share the Gospel

  • Courage to overcome fear and temptation

  • Confidence in God’s promises and provision

“Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” — Ephesians 6:10 (NIV)

Love, Sex & Marriage: A Biblical Journey Through the Song of Solomon

Love, Sex & Marriage: A Biblical Journey Through the Song of Solomon
Love, Sex & Marriage: A Biblical Journey Through the Song of Solomon
Love, Sex & Marriage: A Biblical Journey Through the Song of Solomon

In today’s world, many people struggle with distorted views of love, intimacy, and marriage. From media portrayals to cultural confusion, it’s easy to lose sight of what God originally intended for romantic relationships. But the Bible offers a beautiful invitation back to His design—one that is passionate, pure, joyful, and rooted in covenant. At the center of this divine vision is the Song of Solomon (also known as the Song of Songs), a poetic book tucked in the middle of the Old Testament.

The Song of Solomon is a lyrical and symbolic collection of love poems traditionally attributed to King Solomon. Unlike books that focus on law or prophecy, this one captures the romantic journey between a bride and groom—from attraction and courtship to deep emotional connection and covenant commitment. It also reflects a deeper spiritual truth: the intimate relationship between Christ and His Church.

Our Song of Solomon Study Guide explores this powerful book in two layers of meaning: the literal story of love and marriage, and the spiritual symbolism of God's love for His people.

What Does the Song of Solomon Teach Us?

On a literal level, the Song of Solomon celebrates God-designed desire, mutual pursuit, emotional safety, sexual intimacy within marriage, conflict and reconciliation, and the maturity of lasting love. Key chapters highlight different themes:

  • Ch. 1–2: Attraction, desire, and holy longing

  • Ch. 2–3: The thrill of pursuit and emotional connection

  • Ch. 4–5: Joyful sexual union and sacred intimacy

  • Ch. 5–6: Conflict, separation, and emotional healing

  • Ch. 7–8: Renewed desire, admiration, and covenant love

Spiritually, many scholars see this book as an allegory for the deep, covenantal love between God and His people. In this view:

  • The bride symbolizes God’s people

  • The groom represents Christ

  • The love story points to divine intimacy, trust, and belonging

Whether read romantically or symbolically, the Song of Solomon reminds us that God delights in love that is pure, passionate, and pursued in covenant.

Why Study the Song of Solomon?

This study helps you:

  • Understand desire as something God designed—not something to be ashamed of

  • Rediscover the beauty of mutual pursuit and emotional intimacy

  • Reframe sex as sacred, not shameful

  • Heal from false messages about love and relationships

  • Embrace God’s vision for covenant marriage and love

Each section of our Song of Solomon Study Guide includes biblical text, thematic insights, spiritual applications, and reflection questions that help you dig deeper into God’s heart for love and relationship.

A Closer Look at the Study Guide Themes

1. The Beauty of God-Designed Desire
Desire is not sinful when submitted to God. Honest attraction is part of His design, and waiting on His timing is a spiritual practice that leads to deeper trust and joy.

2. The Power of Pursuit
Healthy love involves intentional pursuit. Emotional safety, mutual affection, and trust are essential in both dating and marriage, mirroring how God pursues us with love.

3. Sacred Intimacy in Marriage
Sex is a gift from God, not something to be viewed with shame. The wedding night in Solomon’s song affirms that intimacy can be joyful, vulnerable, and holy.

4. The Dance of Conflict and Reconnection
Conflict is inevitable, but reconciliation is possible through humility and love. Emotional distance can be a doorway to deeper connection when approached with grace.

5. Rekindling Romance & Deepening Desire
Marital passion must be nurtured. As Solomon and his bride affirm one another, we learn the importance of continual admiration, affection, and intentional romance.

6. Love That Reflects God’s Covenant
The book ends with a vision of fierce, committed love. This kind of enduring, covenant love mirrors God’s unshakable love for us—faithful, forgiving, and never-ending.

Ready to Dive Deeper?

Our printable Song of Solomon Study Guide offers beautifully designed pages with Scripture, key themes, devotionals, and reflection prompts. It’s perfect for personal study, couples’ devotions, or small group discussions.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you to healing, joy, and freedom in your understanding of love, sex, and marriage. Whether you are single, married, or healing from past wounds, this study invites you into a deeper understanding of God’s design—and His loving pursuit of your heart.

How to Help Children Set Up a Summer Weather Station (Ongoing Summer Science Fun!)

How to Help Children Set Up a Summer Weather Station (Ongoing Summer Science Fun!)

Summer is the perfect time to encourage children to explore the world around them through hands-on learning. One of the most engaging ways to teach kids about science is by helping them set up a summer weather station. With just a few basic tools, your child can observe, record, and analyze weather patterns while developing important STEM skills. Whether you're homeschooling, looking for a summer enrichment activity, or just want to keep your kids learning during the break, a backyard weather station is a fun and educational project.

๐ŸŒค Why Set Up a Weather Station?

Creating a weather station for kids encourages curiosity about the natural world. Children learn to make predictions, record data, and understand how weather impacts daily life. It’s also a great way to reinforce key science concepts like temperature, wind speed, humidity, and precipitation.

๐Ÿง’ Materials You'll Need

You don’t need expensive equipment to get started. Most of these items can be found at home or in a local store:

  • Thermometer – to measure temperature

  • Rain gauge – to track precipitation

  • Anemometer – to measure wind speed (can be homemade!)

  • Wind vane – to observe wind direction

  • Barometer (optional) – to measure air pressure

  • Notebook or Weather Journal – for recording daily weather

  • Clipboard and pencil – for outdoor observations

  • Printable weather chart – to track trends over time

๐ŸŒฆ How to Set Up Your Backyard Weather Station

  1. Choose a Safe, Open Location
Set up in a space that gets plenty of sun and is clear of trees and buildings that could block wind or rain.

  2. Install Each Instrument Properly

    • Attach the thermometer in a shaded area (not in direct sunlight).

    • Place the rain gauge on level ground, away from overhangs.

    • Mount the anemometer and wind vane at least 4–6 feet above the ground.

  3. Make It a Daily Routine
Encourage children to check and record the weather at the same time each day, such as morning or evening.

  4. Use a Weather Journal or Chart
Have them draw symbols for sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy days and write down the temperature and other observations.

  5. Track Trends and Make Predictions
At the end of each week, go over the data together. What patterns do they see? Can they predict tomorrow’s weather based on what they’ve learned?

๐Ÿงช Extend the Learning

  • Create weather graphs using the recorded data.

  • Make homemade tools like a DIY anemometer with cups and straws.

  • Learn weather vocabulary such as humidity, forecast, and atmosphere.

  • Compare local weather to other regions or climates.

๐Ÿ“š Educational Benefits

Helping children build a weather station promotes:

  • Scientific observation and recording

  • Critical thinking and data analysis

  • Awareness of environmental science

  • Daily responsibility and consistency

๐Ÿ–จ️ Bonus! Printable Weather Station Kit

To make this activity even easier, check out our FREE Weather Station Printable Kit in the Abundant Family Living shop! It includes:

Lessons from the Life of Joseph: Trusting God Through Every Season

Lessons from the Life of Joseph: Trusting God Through Every Season
Lessons from the Life of Joseph: Trusting God Through Every Season
Lessons from the Life of Joseph: Trusting God Through Every Season

What the Story of Joseph Teaches Us About Calling, Suffering, Faithfulness, and Purpose

The story of Joseph in the book of Genesis is one of the most powerful and practical examples of God's faithfulness in Scripture. Spanning Genesis chapters 37 to 50, Joseph's life offers deep spiritual lessons for anyone navigating uncertainty, rejection, waiting seasons, or unexpected favor. Through every high and low, we see that God is always present, always working behind the scenes, and always faithful to His promises.

Joseph’s journey began with a dream—a glimpse of God’s calling on his life. But instead of applause, he faced jealousy and rejection from his own brothers. This reminds us that God-given callings often aren’t understood by others. Obedience to God’s call requires trust, even when our vision is misunderstood or dismissed.

After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph experienced the sting of betrayal from those closest to him. Still, God's hand remained on him. Even in seasons of heartbreak and confusion, God's purpose continues. Joseph’s story teaches us that betrayal doesn't cancel God’s plan—it refines it.

In Egypt, Joseph faithfully served in a foreign land, even as a slave. His circumstances were far from ideal, but his heart posture remained aligned with God's will. We often wait for the “right” conditions to serve, but Joseph's life shows that faithfulness in obscurity can lead to divine favor. God blesses those who serve Him with excellence, no matter where they are planted.

Joseph also demonstrated unwavering integrity. When tempted by Potiphar’s wife, he refused to sin—not because he feared people, but because he honored God. In a culture that often excuses compromise, Joseph’s example calls us to stand for what’s right, even when no one is watching.

Falsely accused and thrown into prison, Joseph could have given up hope. But even in confinement, God’s presence never left him. His time in prison wasn’t wasted—it was preparation for what was to come. Sometimes, the most hidden seasons are the ones where God forms us most deeply.

Rather than grow bitter, Joseph chose to serve. He used his God-given gift of interpreting dreams to help others, even while he was still in prison. This teaches us the value of using what God has placed in our hands right now—regardless of our circumstances. Obedience in the small things opens doors to greater things.

Two more years passed before Joseph’s situation changed. His story teaches us that God's delays are never denials. Waiting seasons are hard, but they often serve a greater purpose. They build trust, patience, and spiritual maturity. And when God's timing arrives, everything can change in a moment.

In one day, Joseph went from prisoner to ruler. But that promotion was built on years of faithfulness. When God elevates us, it's not just for our benefit—it's for Kingdom purpose. Joseph used his new position to save many lives, pointing us to the impact of obedience and preparation.

At the end of his life, Joseph chose forgiveness over bitterness. He told his brothers, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good.” His perspective wasn’t rooted in pain but in God’s purpose. Forgiveness doesn’t ignore the wrong—it releases us to walk in freedom and healing.

Joseph’s final words in Genesis show us that his heart was anchored in God’s covenant. Even as a ruler in Egypt, his eyes were fixed on God’s promise to His people. He lived for something bigger than himself. That same call is on our lives today—to live for a Kingdom legacy that stretches beyond this life.
